Traditional uses
- Conventional gloss paints and emulsion paints contain solvents which can cause irritation and serious health problems.
- Traditional paints contain the folllowing which cause asthama, allergies and chemical sensitiveness:
- Solvents and white spirit, turpentine, terpenes, ethereal oils, VOC'S glycols, coalescents, animal products.
- Heavy metals - lead, cadmium, mercury
- Formaldehyde and formaldehyde donors, acrolein
- Vinyl chloride
- Phthalates
- Most paints are in the range of 25%-30% solids and have a carrier content of 70%-75% which are neurotoxic, carcinogenic and flammable.
Emerging uses / trends
- Eco friendly paints are totally free of pesticides, free of herbicides and entirely non-toxic.
- Ecology's paints use nano-engineering.The 100 per cent solids coatings use a combination of nanoparticles combined with microparticles.
- These paints have interior, exterior, and furniture applications.
- Eco- friendly primers manufactured as a transition to water- based or oil based containing no VOC's.
- Today paint manufacturers are labeled with seals of approval from environmental organizations informing the consumer of a healthier and safer product.
- Ayurvedic paints is a concept being developed in India and is slowly spreading to other countries.[1]
- Ayurveda is a traditional form of medicine practiced in India and other eastern Asian countries.
- Ayurvedic medications may contain herbs, minerals, forest greens.
- Ayurvedic paints are known to conatin no harmful ingrediants that cause respiratory illnesses.
Finishes
- These paints can be applied straight on old paint surfaces.
- The paints are micro porous and finishes last up to 5 years.
- These paints give a smooth even finish like conventional paints and are available in variety of colours.
Aesthetic qualities
- Eco-friendly paint coatings for wood easily fill and seal pores.
- They do not raise the grain and resist common stains as well as abrasion and impact.
- A first class finish is possible in just two sprayable coats, compared to ten coats of conventional paint.
Availability
- The paints are available in can of 0.25 gallon,1 gallon and 5 gallon
- The paints are available in Six categories :
- Interior sheens
- Matte (Flat)
- Semi-gloss
- Egg-shell
- Satin
- Oil based paints and varnishes
- Water based paint for interior and exterior wood
- Milk based paint for interior and exterior use.
- Exterior sheens
- Satin
- Semi- gloss
- Velvet flat
- Primers are available with no VOC's which can be applied to water- based and oil- based paints.
- Interior sheens
Price
- The pricing for the paints depends upon the type of finish eg. Matte (Flat),Semi-gloss,Egg-shell and Satin.
- Pint - roughly $10
- Quart - roughly $13- $17
- 1 Gallon - roughly $45
- 5 Gallon - $160- $215
- The pricing for primers are as follows:
- 1 Gallon - roughly $34
- 5 Gallon - roughly $165
Material performance
- Eco-friendly paint formulations which are comprised of 100 per cent solid use no carriers but which are fluid enough to be easily sprayed.
- The combination of nanoparticles arrangement packs space very densely, resulting in superior hardness and water resistance.
- The pigmented coatings are truly opaque and coverage is achieved with as little as 0.3mil.
- These coatings require only UV light to cure.
- Exceptional durability, color retention, and adhesion.
Composition
- Eco-friendly paints constitute of :
- Water, natural and synthetic binders or resins (water-based - non toxic)
- Pigments (various - all non toxic)
- Mineral fillers - limestone, clays (non-toxic)
- Viscosity builders - cellulose & resinous (non-toxic)
- Opacifiers - titanium dioxide (non-toxic)
- Levelling aids (non-toxic)
- Waxes & modifiers (non-toxic)
- Milk paint consists of calcium- casement mixed with mineral pigments for color (protein- based- no VOC's)
- In the Eco-Paints, the paints, stains, thinners and waxes are made from naturally-derived raw materials including citrus peel extracts, essential oils, seed oils, tree resins, inert mineral fillers, tree and bee waxes,lead-free dryers and natural pigments.
Environmental impact
- Conventional paints have a lingering and unpleasant paint smells in the home.
- Most matte and silk paints contain solvents which are positively harmful and cause Sick Building Syndrome,Danish Painters Syndrome, asthma, allergies and chemical sensitivities;
- Eco-friendly paint contains none of the following: ozone depleting compounds, carcinogens, and hazardous air pollutants.
- The use of Eco-friendly paint technology reduces the finishing process from 20 minutes to three seconds, cuts down manufacturing line space by 80 per cent and energy consumption by 75 per cent.
LEED
- For LEED ratings in a commercial environment eco- friendly paint would fall under prerequisite Policy 1 of the Materials and Resource section.
Life Safety & Rating Standards
Flammability rating
- Eco-friendly paints do not contain volatile compounds such as Ammonia(unlike conventional paints) and are not flammable.
Coefficient of friction
- Eco-friendly paint coatings have excellent adhesion and abrasion resistance.
