Building analysis
Design Concept: Greenhouse Nightclub is the first L.E.E.D. registered eco-friendly nightclub in the United States. [1] It is a bi-level 6,000 square foot club, lounge, and event space built from recycled or recyclable materials.
“Green living has become a way of life for many people and especially New Yorkers,” says Jon B, owner of the Greenhouse. “We are proud to be the first ones to create an event space that will merge nightlife with positive steps towards addressing global concerns, and hope that eventually others will be encouraged to follow our foot steps.”[2]
“ I decided to stay away from re-creating a greenhouse, and opted to transpose the notion of landscape to an interior space. The design concept was to convey the dynamic richness of nature as a living system ,”[3] Di Oronzo comments.
Design Aspects:
One design feature within the space is the transparent ceiling fixture, comprised of over 5,000 individually hung crystals, which is designed to emulate a rolling landscape.
Other features include bars comprised of clear recycled glass with panorama designs, displaying lush scenes; the walls are made of sustainable bamboo; and waterless urinals and low-flow toilets will reduce water usage.
According to the New York Post, "That means that everything from building materials and garbage disposal, energy and water usage, has to be regulated and reduced. With walls made of sustainable bamboo instead of wood and LED lightbulbs that use just one-thirtieth of the energy of regular incandescent bulbs, the space cost 40 percent more to build than a traditional club." [4]
Greenhouse is also said to buy wind power credits worth 100% of its energy needs, and has waterless urinals and low-flow toilets to save an estimated 15,000 gallons annually.
Detail analysis
The walls connect to the ceiling via a series of laser-cut ribs creating a shelter within the space. The ribs are lined with a series of 6” round panels organized in a self-similar, nonrecursive pattern generated through a fractal algorithm.[5] One third of the panels are upholstered with eco-friendly vinyl, one third of them clad in sustainable boxwood. The rest is lacquered and each disk houses an LED light point of 0.8 watts. The light points, in total 2,500, are all connected to a computer and describe effects which can come from music beats or video signals. [6] The resulting goal is to offer the experiential opportunity of a “live” landscape.
