Finish and aesthetic qualities
- The color comes from the type and content of the recycled paper, the phenolic resins and the pigments and dyes used in the manufacturing process
- As PaperStone ages it develops a patina. The patina begins as a pale amber and deepens to a rich shade of sienna and the color in the recycled paper. The patina will be most notable in lighter colors.
- Color and brightness may vary from sheet to sheet
- PaperStone has a mottled appearance
- Paperstone is affected by UV light exposure resulting in some color shifting
- When first installed, the Paperstone will have more surface texture and will become smoother and develop a deeper luster over time and with use.
PaperStone comes in three varieties
- Original PaperStone
- is a composite material that contains 100% post-consumer recycled cardboard, water based petroleum-free resin and pigment
- natural progression of aging proceed to produce an authentic product that matches the customers expectation
- Comes in the following colors:
- Cabernet
- Denim
- Evergreen
- Mocha
- Slate
- PaperStone Certified
- is made from 100% recycled standard office paper, water based petroleum-free resin and pigment
- Comes in the following colors:
- Chocolate
- Grass
- Indigo
- Obsidian
- Plum
- Gunmetal
- Virgin Series
- PaperStone made from virgin fiber
- Comes in the following colors:
- Leather
Cost analysis
- PaperStone panel prices are roughly the same as quality granite and brand name solid surface or quartz material products
- As a result of the ease of workmanship and finish of PaperStone, the installed prices are often lower
- Prices range from $36.00 - $57.00 per square foot, depending on panel thickness
Material properties
Primary structural use
- PaperStone is durable and is recommended for residential kitchen and bath and commercial uses, indoor and out.
Material performance
- high modulus of elasticity
- is resistant to staining in kitchen applications
- PaperStone has been thoroughly tested and certified as non-detectable for formaldehyde by the most demanding test available, the so-called desiccant method test
- PaperStone is warm to the touch
- 45,000 psi compressive strength
Dimensional and opening restriction
- The standard PaperStone panel is 60" x 144“
- Other panel options are:
- 30" x 144",
- 30" x 72",
- 60" x 72"
- Standard thicknesses are readily available in 3/4 inch, 1 inch, and 1-1/4 inch.
- Other panel sizes and thicknesses are available by special order.
- PaperStone can handle 45,000 pounds of compressive pressure per square inch and a 1-inch thick sheet will cantilever 4 feet with deflection of less than 1/16 inch.
Manufacturing process and assembly
Manufacturing Process
- PaperStone is made from sustainable sources. It is manufactured in three versions.
- Original PaperStone contains 100% post-consumer recycled cardboard
- PaperStone Certified is made from 100% recycled standard office paper.
- PaperStone made from virgin fiber is also available.
- All PaperStone products are made from Paneltech's proprietary, petroleum-free resin that contains natural ingredients like cashew nut shell liquid.
- PaperStone beomes a composite product when specially-produced sheets of paper are saturated with phenolic resin and pressed under heat and pressure.
Assembly Process
- All PaperStone products are available in the same panel sizes, basic colors, and have identical mechanical properties
- Mechanical attachments stay secure in tapped screw holes
- Router and laser detail limited only by workman's imagination
- Structurally rigid and sound in vertical and horizontal applications
- PaperStone should be cut dry with a triple chip carbide-tipped saw blade and carbide-tipped router bits
- Joints may be aligned using a biscuit joiner and slow drying epoxy or a "superglue" type product
- PaperStone Finish is recommended
Environmental impact
- PaperStone-Certified is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council or FSC, Smartwood and the Rainforest Alliance.
- The paper is sourced from Grays Harbor Paper Company.
- PaperStone products are made from post-consumer waste, recycled paper and proprietary, petroleum-free, phenolic resins. To the maximum extent technically possible, water is used as the resin solvent.
- PaperStone is the 'greenest' architectural surface on the market today.
- Depending upon the project, the use of PaperStone may contribute up to five LEED points from three categories:
- Materials and Resources
- Indoor Environmental Quality
- Innovation and Design Process
