Emerging uses / trends
Sensitile® products were born from the need to reconcile the relationship between ourselves and our environment. Sensitile’s® materials quietly interact with ambient light and shadow creating an aesthetically pleasing solution to our utilitarian needs. Using durable acrylics and micro-concrete, Sensitile® provides a varied line of tiles and panels that can be used for items as small as POP displays to exterior facades and flooring. The materials are durable, temperature resistant and energy efficient.
Finish and aesthetic qualities
- Sensitile® boasts a varied line of acrylic products with Scintilla® Lumina™ being the only medium with the ability to conduct a single energy efficient light source to create hundreds of floating points of light through the substrate of the material. Scintilla® Lumina™ comes in standard colors, and thicknesses with custom thicknesses and color matching also available. There are many applications were Scintilla® Lumina™ can be utilized with stunning results; counter tops, bar tops, partitions, feature walls, doors and light fixtures.
- Sensitile ® Scintilla® is a material as dynamic as light. Scintilla® Lumina® interacts with surrounding light and shadows and transporting them to unexpected points on the surface leading to a magnificent interaction that is metamorphosing and ever changing. Scintilla® can be utilized in various applications such as (but not limited to) table tops, counter tops, feature walls, and back-splashes.
- Sensitile® Jali® panels and tiles are the other acrylic line from Sensitile®. Available in five patterns, standard colors and thicknesses with custom thicknesses and color matching also available. Each Jali® pattern comes in various pattern densities to further expand on the opacity and options of the product. There are many applications were Jali® tiles and panels can be utilized with stunning results; back-splashes, partitions, feature walls, doors and light fixtures.
- Sensitile® Terrazzo Lumina™ works with a single energy efficient to defy the inherent properties of concrete creating numerous points of light across the surface of the material. While Sensitile® Terrazzo is a unique micro-concrete with cleverly integrated light channels allowing the material to interact with ambient light, shadows, movements and colors creating a captivating surface with a silent presence. Terrazzo and Terrazzo Lumina™ are highly customizable and come in standard sizes and colors. Applications for Terrazzo and Terrazzo Lumina™ vary from bar tops to interactive feature walls. [1]

Installation Methods
Scintilla and Jali materials General Information In general, most woodworking equipment and tools are quite suitable for working with our Scintilla and Jali products, however proper selection of bits, blades and correct techniques will give the best results. Please contact Sensitile® or visit their website for up to date installation and fabrication guidelines.
Terrazzo: Installed like traditional stone or ceramic tile.
Material performance
- Scintilla is made of PMMA (acrylic) which is highly durable and naturally resists abrasion. It successfully resists stains, scratching and general wear. It will not “yellow” in direct sunlight or with intense UV exposure.
- Tensile Strength (parallel to grain): 10,000 psi
- Compressive Strength (edge to edge): 18,000 psi
- Terrazzo is composed of a proprietary micro-concrete mix and has the durability of concrete.
- Tensile Strength: 1,200 psi
- Compressive Strength: 4,400 psi
Acoustic property
- Higher sound absorbency than glass
Manufacturing process and assembly
- Scintilla: Hundreds of light conducting channels are carved into a transparent block of clear or pigmented polymer to create each tile. These fiber-optic elements give the material the ability to shift, shimmer and reflect in response to movement and changes in light intensity on the tile.
- Terrazzo: Terrazzo tiles contain acrylic fiber-optic channels embedded within concrete to transfer light from one point to another. As shadows move across Terrazzo’s surface, the light channels flicker with a randomized, twinkling effect.
Environment and Life Safety
Environmental impact
- Currently, Sensitile is not able to use recycled materials in their products. However, Sensitile is one of the few products on the market that is interactive and dynamic without using a power source.
Recycling
- The cement-based Terrazzo line can be recycled through traditional cement recyclers despite having a minimal plastic content (5% or less). The Scintilla®/Jali® products can be recycled either by returning the product to Sensitile® for either resale/recycle or directly through a plastic recycler. In some instances, Sensitile® installations can be dismounted and “portable”.
- Due primarily to maintaining the integrity of our products, at the present time Sensitile’s standard product lines do not incorporate any recycled materials. However, we do offer a PETG cladding option for Scintilla and Jali which can be 100% recycled. Our product lines and processes are constantly evolving which leaves open the opportunity to incorporate recyclables in the future.
Flammability rating
- Scintilla
- Burning rate 0.8in/min
- Flammability UL 94 94HB
- Terrazzo
- Burning rate 0 (ASTM 0635)
- Not flammable (UL 94)
Coefficient of friction
- 0.6 - 0.8, depending on finish
