Traditional uses

  • Ceiling and wall mounted applications
  • Column veneers
  • Non-structural wood veneered beams

Finish and aesthetic qualities

  • Solid Lumber, MDF or particle board with wood veneer
  • Wide variety of color and grain
  • Depending on the manufacturer solid lumber ranges from White Oak to Cherry
  • Depending on the manufacurer veneered wood range from Rosewood to Zebrawood
  • Some manufactureres are making a strong case for using wood ceilings. In John Naisbitt's book Megatrends: Ten New Directions Transforming Our Lives, he "anticipated our high-tech lives will seek high-touch environments-the tactile and real needing to counterweight the digital and virtual. As a finish material, wood welcomes this balance. Its organic voice whispers the textures of nature."

Surface forms / shapes

  • Many design options, offered in a variety of shapes and configurations
  • Typically connect to standard t-rail or c-rail grid, using a variety of fasteners including: the Torsion Spring Assembly and C-Hanger mounting clips
  • Linear Systems are composed of wood slats that run parallel to one another, attach to a t-rail grid or c-rail grid
  • Panel Grille Systems are composed of wood slats that lay perpendicular to the ground and are supported by wooden dowels or wood backed, and attached to a t-rail grid
  • Modular Wood Cubes Systems, lay into a t-rail grid or matching wood grid system
  • Wood Square Systems, made of MDF or particle board with a wood veneer, lay into a t-rail grid

Cost analysis

  • Varies depending on wood species and system

Material properties

Primary structural use

  • Non Structural, supported by a standard acoustic tile grid or a wood grid

Material performance

  • Wood adapts to changes in moisture and temperature

Dimensional and opening restriction

  • Depending on manufacturer the systems are closed or open between wood peices. Some of the systems have gaps, while others over lap.
  • Rulon Co. Linear systems run up to 10' long, modular are available in 4 1/2", 4" & 6" widths with a 3/4" gap between wood slats
  • Rulon Co. Closed linear systems modular are available in 4" width, with wood that is 4 1/4" wide and a 1/4" over lap between boards

Acoustic property

  • Allows sound to pass through
  • Addition of a fiberglass blanket will absorb sound
  • See Acoustic wall panels for sound absorbant suspended wood ceilings

Environment and Life Safety

Environmental impact

  • Depending on manufacturer material contributes to LEED credits
  • Rulon Co. has the following LEED credit opportunities in Materials and resources and indoor environment quality
Recycled Content - 100% pre-consumer recycled wood fiber core board used for veneered wood
Regional Materials - reliant on product and location of project
Certified Wood - Rulon is a Forest Stewardship Council company certificate holder, use responsibly harvested lumber
Low Emitting Materials, Adhesives, and Sealants - Installation glues are low voc water-based
Low Emitting Materials, Paints and Coatings - low voc water-based materials used for the finishes
Low Emitting Materials, Composite Wood and Agrifiber Products - None of the veneered cores contain added urea formaldehyde

Flammability rating

  • Depends on manufacturer
  • According to Rulon Co. if the wood ceiling boards are specified as "fire resistant" they have a A flame spread rating accoring to the ASTM E84 test.
